Global Book Award Silver Medal Winner 2025

A missing CEO.
A lost fortune.
A belated homecoming.

Alice Zhu is a first-generation immigrant, second-career attorney, and the opposite of a frequent flyer—one traumatic incident was enough to put her off planes for 35 years. But her successful Silicon Valley career hinges heavily on a Shanghai-based tech company, run by her childhood friend: the brilliant yet volatile Deckard Shen.

When Deckard's company falls behind on a hefty legal bill and he disappears, Alice's job is suddenly on the line—unless she's desperate enough to board a flight to China.

In Shanghai, Alice finds Deckard gone, his company falling apart, and his wife seeking a divorce. A rumored Bitcoin windfall could turn things around—if it really exists.

What begins as a business trip quickly spirals into a cross-country hunt for a friend, a fortune, and fragments of the past that shadowy foes seem intent on keeping hidden at all costs.

A complex international thriller set against the backdrop of modern-day China and interwoven with memories of a childhood in 1980s Nanjing.

Praises for If You Don't Go

"This novel, set in China, deftly weaves the restless pre-Tian'anmen era with the uneasy post-pandemic present. Against the backdrop of today's escalating U.S.-China tensions, the story becomes more than a mystery—it's a window into the lives of people navigating the crosscurrents of ideology, censorship, and societal change. Best of all, this modern adventure mystery has a Bitcoin component!"
— Bobby C. Lee, author of The Promise of Bitcoin, co-founder and former CEO of BTCChina

The finished novel is even stronger: set mainly in China, it provides a propulsive narrative of a missing-person case with high stakes. It's also a great vacation read (I finished the book in Florence), one that would be fun to read anywhere.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Suspenseful thrillerAndrea C

I enjoyed reading this suspenseful thriller about Alice Zhu's journey, from her fear of flying, to her complicated history with China, to her sense of obligation to Deckard, the story balances really well her internal struggles with the external mystery of Deckard's disappearance. I also liked how the setting of the book transitioned from Shanghai to some of the quieter and more remote regions of China.

Traveling alongside Alice felt personal. The mystery kept moving, but what stuck with me were the quiet moments, the cultural friction, and the emotional weight of going back to a place you left behind. Thoughtful and tense without needing constant action.

Alice Zhu felt deeply human to me, especially her reluctance to return to China and the way fear and memory constantly tug at her decisions. I really liked Duan Lili, sharp and unpredictable, bringing energy and friction into every scene she is in. By the end, Alice's confrontation with her history felt just as important as uncovering what really happened to Deckard... and that balance worked beautifully.

About the Author

Diana Hongcha has worked as both an attorney and a part-time middle school teacher. She dreams of one day splitting her time between Chengdu, China, and Bozeman, Montana, while wrangling a busy family life. For now, international living remains more of a fantasy than a plan.

Like the protagonist in her book, Diana grew up in China and emigrated to the U.S. as a teenager, but that's where the similarities end. She travels to China often for work and family, and those trips continue to shape her view of a country that's both deeply familiar and ever-changing. Recognizing that China remains misunderstood in the West despite its constant presence in the headlines, Diana—a lifelong mystery and thriller lover—set out to bridge that gap through a suspenseful, compelling story set in her home country. A self-described nerd, she also wanted to learn the technical details of Bitcoin and add a layer of intrigue to the novel. Writing If You Don't Go allowed her to weave these threads together.
